The Musicians
Ivan Rosenblum taught education and music at U.C.S.C. from 1970-80. He has a B.A. from Queens College, N.Y.C., and a Masters and Doctorate from Harvard University. He studied piano and chamber music with Robert Hagopian and Menahem Pressler of the Beaux Arts Trio. He also studied composition with Hugo Weisgall and Vittorio Rieti. Ivan’s compositions have been performed at the University of California, Santas Cruz, the Oakland Museum of Art, the Berkeley Repertory Theater, and New Music Works, as well as on radio stations KPFA, KQED and KUSP. Ivan is well known to Santa Cruz audiences through his appearances with the Santa Cruz Chamber Players, Distinguished Artist Series, and New Music Works. As an active Santa Cruz piano teacher and chamber music coach, Ivan previously directed the Chamber Players’ Celebrating Youth Chamber Music Program.
Neil Fairbairn studied bassoon with Sherman Walt of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and William Waterhouse of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. A freelance musician in Britain for twenty years, he performed and toured regularly with Britain’s Royal National Theater. Returning to the Greater Boston area, Neil taught bassoon and coached chamber music at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. He was a member of the chamber ensemble Music at Eden’s Edge and the wind quintet, Solar Winds. An author and educational consultant, he was associate editor of The Music Makers, a biographical encyclopedia of musicians. His books on non-musical subjects include A Traveller’s Guide to the Kingdoms of Arthur and A Brief History of Gardening. Since moving to Santa Cruz in 2019, Neil has performed with Espressivo, I Cantori di Carmel, New Music Works, and the Santa Cruz Chorale.
