Explore Cabrillo College's horticulture program with Chair Sarah Patiño Hulick. Learn how hands-on training builds careers, supports local agriculture, and opens doors for women in the field.
We are pleased to welcome Sarah Patiño Hulick, Faculty and Department Chair of Horticulture and Agricultural Plant Sciences at Cabrillo College, for an inspiring and informative presentation on the college’s horticulture program and its impact on students and the local community.
Sarah will provide an overview of Cabrillo’s Horticulture and Agricultural Plant Sciences programs, including how the department prepares students for meaningful careers in plant science, sustainable agriculture, crop production, landscape design, and agritech fields. With hands-on training, a rich set of associate degrees and certificates (including Berry Production), and connection to local industry partners, the program equips learners for high-demand opportunities in both traditional and emerging agricultural roles.
As Department Chair, Sarah will also share insights on how women are progressing in this traditionally male-dominated field, explore experiences in non-traditional career paths, and discuss what it’s like for women pursuing horticulture and agriculture science today.
Cabrillo’s horticulture facilities provide world-class, experiential learning — from hydroponics and organic farming to greenhouse management and landscape design — reflecting the evolving needs of modern agriculture.
We will also touch on why horticulture matters to Santa Cruz County:
• Berries and specialty crops are among the region’s top agricultural commodities, with berry production representing a significant share of the county’s agricultural output and economic value.
• Local students trained in horticulture contribute to the workforce that supports these vital crops as well as sustainable landscapes and food systems across the Central Coast.
Join us for this engaging look at how horticulture education shapes careers, supports local agriculture, and opens doors for women in science, technology, and agriculture.
