Male dominance has been a pervasive feature of human societies since the earliest civilizations some 5-6000 years ago. But the expressions of patriarchy have varied from place to place and changed over time.
Quite recently, patriarchy has been challenged by an array of feminist movements, resulting in dramatic changes in the lives of women and men alike. But patriarchal resistance to these changes has accompanied the feminist challenge and found expression in various ways.
