November 1: China and the World
China has often been understood as an isolated civilization in East Asia. But it has long had an impact reaching far beyond its own borders. During the 19th century, China was subjected to military defeat and cultural humiliation at the hands of western and Japanese imperialism. Since the triumph of the Chinese Communist Party in the mid-20th century, China has returned to a far more prominent position in global affairs.
