Empire-building has been a persistent element in the human story for a very long time, but these empires have appeared in a variety of different forms. For much of its history, empire has been celebrated as evidence of civilizational vitality. More recently, however, empire has come in for sharp criticism. Nonetheless, the imperial impulse seems far from dead.
