“Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world.” —Jeanette Winterson

September 2025: Women & Power: A Manifesto by Mary Beard

A classicist asks: If women aren’t perceived to be within the structure of power, isn’t it power itself we need to redefine?

From the book:

We have no template for what a powerful woman looks like, except that she looks rather like a man.

October 2025: Table for Two: Fictions by Amor Towles

Includes six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden-Age Hollywood. “Each tale is as satisfying as a master chef’s main course, filled with drama, wit, erudition and, most of all, heart.” —L.A. Times

From the book:

“We should have dinner some time.”

“That would be lovely,” I replied and headed for the door. Though needless to say, I'd sooner hang.

November 2025: Daring to Drive A Saudi Woman’s Awakening by Manal Al-Sharif

By the woman who led the movement that won Saudi women the right to drive, showing how women in Muslim countries are helping change their culture, one step at a time.

From the book:

Because my mother couldn't change my present, I decided to change my daughter's future.

December 2025: The Plot Against America by Philip Roth

“It’s not a prophecy; it’s a nightmare, and it becomes more nightmarish–and also funnier and more bizarre–as is goes along.... [A] sinuous and brilliant book, with its extreme sweetness, its black pain, and its low, ceaseless cackle.” —The New Yorker

From the book:

How can this be happening in America? How can people like these be in charge of our country? If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I’d think I was having a hallucination.
