Discover the fascinating history of Mountain Charley, Hiram Scott, and the toll roads that once connected early settlers in the Santa Cruz Mountains. These rural roads that shaped local commerce and travel are the setting for stories of rugged pioneers and daring enterprises. Jay will share the stories of some colorful characters who called the Santa Cruz Mountains home.

Jay Topping has had a lifelong passion for history. He is especially interested in the history of Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara Counties. He consults archival materials in order to present history lectures on a variety of topics to various societies and organizations. Jay is a member of the Scotts Valley Historical Society, serving as the Society’s lead historian. He also serves on the Society board. Jay is currently writing a book about Hiram Scott’s life.
