The VOTE is here at last! Join us to pick the 2027 OCR book for our community!

It was tough this year, but in the end, we definitely have a theme (not by plan).  Our focus is on the environment, and these books encompass its delicate balance, threats, beauty, and solutions for dealing with some of the dangers we face.

Each book has merit and a myriad of possibilities for events to be planned around them.

Our candidates are:

The Music of Bees, by Eileen Garvin (2021) Eileen would most likely hold a virtual author event since her speaking fee is beyond our budget.

Shade:  The Promise of a Forgotten Natural Resource by Sam Bloch (2025) Sam has let us know that he will be in SFO between Feb 14-20 and would waive transportation costs if we scheduled him during that time period.  His speaking fee is $1000

The Tree Collectors by Amy Stewart ((2026) This author is a past SC resident and currently resides in Portland.  Her $3000 speaking fee is negotiable since she loves coming here. She will be in Florida 2/3 so we would have to book her either before or after some other speaking engagements.

California Against the Sea:  Visions for Our Vanishing Coastline by Rosanna Xia (2023) was a contender for 2025.  She lives in LA so we think there is a good possibility she would come although we haven’t reached out yet.

Note About Registration: Registration is used for the purpose of notifying people in the case of cancellation or a change of venue. It does NOT guarantee you a space. Space will be available on a first come, first served basis.

It also provides access to study rooms and limited library services including a small collection of about 500 books for children and teens. The LOLA is located at the Simpkins Family Swim Center at 979 17th Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95062.
