The Comedy of Errors

Join Saturday Shakespeare at Aptos Library for five lively sessions with guest experts, group readings, and discussions, ending with a shared play viewing. Attend in person or on Zoom!

In the first four meetings there will be a talk followed by a reading of part of the text. In the fifth meeting, we will watch a DVD screening of the play.  Participants can attend either in person at the library or by Zoom. The plot of this early Shakespeare play centers on two sets of identical twins, (one from Syracuse and one from Ephesus) who, unaware of their other halves' existence, end up in the same town. Naturally, this provides plenty of opportunity for comic misunderstanding. 

The meetings take place on Saturdays at 10:15 am. The schedule is as follows:

October 3
Speaker Julia Lupton, Professor Emerita of English at UC Irvine and co-director of the New Swan Shakespeare Center.  
Readings: Act I, Scenes 1 & 2, Act II, Scenes 1 & 2.

October 10
Speaker Beth Lopes, a freelance theater director and teacher based in Los Angeles.
Readings: Act III, Scenes 1 & 2. 

October 17
Speaker: Susan Myer Silton, a theatre director and dramaturg.  She is currently dramaturg for Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s production of August Wilson’s Fences. 
Readings: Act IV, Scenes 1, 2, 3 & 4. 

October 24
Speaker: Charles Pasternak, the artistic director of Santa Cruz Shakespeare. In addition to being artistic director, Charles is currently the director of SCS's production of Much Ado About Nothing in which he also plays the role of Don Pedro, and in September he will play the role of Elyot in Noel Coward's Private Lives, part of SCS's extended fall season. 
Readings: Act V, Scene 1. 

October 31
We will see a DVD screening of the 1983 BBC production of The Comedy of Errors starring Michael Kitchen and Roger Daltrey who play both the Syracusan and Ephesian brothers.
